Spring is here, and we're opening for the season with our annual Earth Day celebration — a full day of film, conversation, and collective action. All free, and all centered around one of New York City's most overlooked subjects: its trash.
We open the Arverne Cinema (Inside) at 1pm with a work-in-progress screening of Discard Records, a love letter to New York City told through its trash. Filmmaker sTo Len, who recently served as Public Artist in Residence at the NYC Department of Sanitation, joins us after the screening for a conversation.
From 3-5pm, head outside for a shoreline cleanup at Dubos Point Wildlife Sanctuary. The objects we collect will become material for collaborative printmaking.
We close with a 6pm screening of Maintenance Artist, a vibrant portrait of the revolutionary Mierle Laderman Ukeles — the first artist in residence at the NYC Department of Sanitation. Director Toby Perl Freilich joins us for a discussion afterward.
Brothers will serve beans & greens from 4-6pm in the courtyard before the 6pm screening.
Presented in partnership with Laru Beya, Union Docs, American Littoral Society, Valé Collective, and Edgemere Farm Works.
