by Guy de la Valdene & Christian Odasso. 1973. 52 min.
A glittering time capsule of the Florida Keys in the 1970s, we're excited to present a new restoration of Tarpon. Recently rediscovered after being nearly impossible to see for decades, this treasured documentary accompanies fly fishers out on the open water. Acclaimed French cinematographer Christian Odasso and naturalist Guy de la Valdene ask questions about the ethics of catch-and-release, highlighting the increased pressure tourists and irresponsible sportsmen put on on the ocean at a time when everything was changing. Featuring original music by Jimmy Buffet and appearances by cult '60s poets and authors Richard Brautigan, Thomas McGuane, and Jim Harrison, who narrates the film.
On the occasion of World Ocean Day, we're pleased to present this screening in collaboration with Surfrider, a foundation dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves, and beaches, for all people. If you have ever noticed the two beautiful native gardens at the Arverne Cinema, they were planted by our friends at Surfrider.
Special thanks to Cara Cannella.
